Below are the results of a makeover of my one, very tiny bathroom. Since I wasn't going to increase the size, or move any of the fixtures, I had to find a way to maximize the space and integrate it with the rest of the house.
Before: Purple walls (hey, they made me happy), shower curtain, cheapest Home Depot fixtures possible, and a medicine cabinet from Ikea that I like, but on which guests frequently bonked their heads. I was starting with a tiny space, and one that had very little storage.

After: New wall colors, fancy tile around the shower (which I just love!), and a shower door. Note that it would be very difficult indeed to bonk your head on that mirror. When I visited Art Tile and let them know that I had a 1940s bungalow, they suggested subway tile for the bathroom. That's that smooth, rectangular tile, not necessarily very glossy. I totally understood why they suggested it, but I just didn't want to use it. The rest of my house has wood floors, and the reddish tile just seemed to speak to me. Art Tile lets you check out samples or "boards" with the base tile and the accents, so I took a bunch home to mull it over before settling on the ones I wanted in the first place. |

| Before: Here's the tub area, with the shower curtain open. The fixtures in the tub are the cheapest one can find, and they mostly function, but they don't make me all that happy. At least it looked clean when I took the picture! | ![]() |
After: The tile around the window was a happy accident. Building up from the tub, the tiles turned out to measure perfectly for one full bullnose tile surrounding the window. Also, dig the snazzy floors!

| Before: Photo color & quality suck, but here is the linoleum floor (more Home Depot bargain basement) and the yucky, cheapo sink cabinet. The sink faucet also leaked like a sieve. | ![]() |
After: The vanity cabinet has two drawers, so it is much more useful space for storing stuff. Therefore, I was able to forego a medicine cabinet. I actually didn't much like the cabinet in the home improvement store, but it was the best of a bad selection. Once I got it installed with all that reddish tile, though, it looked pretty darn good. |
| Before: Medicine cabinet and oh, so attractive light fixture (another from the Home Depot Bargain Basement). The cabinet is huge because I didn't have much storage. | ![]() |
After: The new shelf over the back of the (new) toilet makes everything more integrated, and draws attention away from the toilet somewhat. I would have loved to move the toilet so it wasn't just inside the door, but that just wasn't feasible (way too much plumbing). |
